About Sodwana Bay

Sodwana Bay is a marine reserve situated in the heart of South Africa’s first World Heritage Site surrounded by Big 5 game parks. It boasts unspoiled beaches, pristine coral reefs and is one of the top 10 dive sites in the world.  With Sodwana’s  tropical climate, diving can be enjoyed all year round. The warm, blue Indian Ocean is home to the Big 6:  Whale Shark, Whale, Dolphin, Shark, Manta Ray and Turtle. Sodwana Bay is surrounded by some of the largest  vegetated sand dunes in the world. Lake Sibaya is the largest freshwater spring fed lake in Southern Africa. One can watch the sunrise and dive with the Big 6 in the morning and have sundowners with the Big 5 in the afternoon at one of the surrounding game reserves. The area is home to some of the best private game reserves, Phinda Game reserve, Tembe Elephant Park (that has some of the largest big tuskers left in Africa) and the world famous Hluhluwe iMfolozi Park. The magical surroundings of Sodwana Bay plus additional activities including deep sea fishing, fresh water Tiger fishing, boating, hiking, turtle tours, micro-light flights, quad biking, surfing and freediving makes this an ideal and unique adventure destination.

Throughout the year diving in Sodwana is spectacular. The visibility is good with up to 40m experienced in Summer.

Our Summer months are hot and the water is warm. The average water temperature in Summer is 29 degrees, going up to 32 degrees. Our Winter months are balmy with daytime temperatures around 25 degrees and the water temperature rarely going below 20 degrees.

January to December: You can expect to see Sharks, Dolphins and Whale Sharks in addition to stunning coral and a myriad of vividly coloured fish and other sea creatures.

July to November: Whales are abundant during this period with Humpback Whales migrating to give birth in warmer waters from September to November.

December and January: This is the time to see Ragged Tooth Sharks and particularly gestating females which are not feeding and are peaceful.

November to February: Loggerhead and Leatherback Turtles have been coming to Sodwana beaches for hundreds of years. Nesting and laying starts in early November and the hatchlings make their way to the sea at night from early January.
